According to new research published in the journal Science this week, plant and animal extinctions are happening at a rate 1000 times greater than before humans walked the Earth. Stuart Pimm of Duke University joins Hari Sreenivasan to illuminate how extinction rates are determined and what can be done to help set conservation priorities.

Die Schätzungen der globalen Erwärmung infolge des menschgemachten Treibhauseffektes bewegen sich zwischen 1,4 und 6,8 Grad bis zum Jahr 2100.
Man gibt die Klimasensitivität in Grad Celsius Erwärmung an, die sich bei einer Verdopplung der CO2-Konzentration von vorindustriellen 280 ppm auf 560 ppm ergeben würde, nachdem das Klimasystem einen neuen Gleichgewichtszustand erreicht hat. Abschätzungen dieser Klimasensitivität reichen von 0,1 Grad bis 9,6 Grad. Mit 95-prozentiger Wahrscheinlichkeit liegt sie jedoch zwischen 2 und 4,5 Grad mit einer besten Schätzung von etwa 3 Grad. Bei moderaten Emissionsszenarien werden diese 560 ppm zwischen 2050 und 2070 erreicht werden.
