Wall Street: Rote Pfeile dank Öl und Quartalszahlen
Die US-Börsen hatten den Tag schon schwach begonnen, schwache Quartalszahlen und ein erneut steigender Ölpreis besiegelten das Schiksal der Indizes. Der Dow-Jones-Index schloss mit einem Minus von 12 Zählern oder 0,1 Prozent auf 9885 Punkten, die Nasdaq verbesserte sich derweil um 10 Zähler oder 0,5 Prozent auf 1932 Punkte.
Der Ölpreis schob sich im Laufe des Mittwochshandel wieder an die 55-Dollar-Grenze heran, nachdem der Markt gleich zwei schlechte Nachrichten hatte einstecken müssen. Die Importe an Roh- und Heizöl scheinen niedriger zu sein als die vor allem zu Winterbeginn steigende Nachfrage, und außerdem bleiben die Lagerbestände hinter den Vergleichszahlen des Vorjahres zurück.
Die meisten Dow-Verlierer litten aber unter den eigenen Quartalszahlen. Größter Verlierer war Honeywell mit einem Abschlag von 4,7 Prozent. Die Analysten von Morgan Stanley machen sich aber laut Sorgen um den Ausblick und Schwäche im Raumfahrtgeschäft und stufen die Aktie auf „Neutral“ ab.
Etwas besser präsentierte sich der Industrie-Multi United Technologies. Das Unternehmen, das Flugzeugturbinen, Alarmanlagen und Aufzüge herstellt, schlägt mit einem Gewinn von 722 Millionen Dollar oder 1,43 Dollar pro Aktie die Erwartungen, und auch der Umsatz ist mit 9,34 Milliarden Dollar unerwartet stark.
Um 6,5 Prozent stürzte indes der Chip- und Handyhersteller Motorola ab, der für das abgelaufene Quartal zwar gute Zahlen bilanziert, aber die Analysten nicht zufrieden stellt. Mit über 23 Millionen ausgelieferten Handys ist der Umsatz um ein Viertel gewachsen, und der Gewinn hat sich vervierfacht. Man blickt dennoch neidisch auf Nokia, wo man doppelt so viele Geräte los wurde. Motorola will seinen Marktanteil künftig zumindest verteidigen, und 17 neue Handymodelle sollen helfen. Für das laufende Quartal gibt man sich optimistisch.

eBay beats by a penny, ex items; guides for Q4, Y04, and Y05 (EBAY) 91.36 -1.09: Reports Q3 (Sep) earnings of $0.28 per share, excluding items, $0.01 better than the Reuters Estimates consensus of $0.27; revenues rose 51.8% year/year to $805.9 mln vs the $780.8 mln consensus. Co expects Y04 revs of $3.25 bln and EPS of $1.20, Reuters consensus is $3.21 bln and $1.20; sees Q4 revs of $915 mln and Q4 EPS of $0.33, Reuters consensus is $905 mln and $0.33, respectively. Affymetrix beats on EPS, misses on revs, guides Y04 in line (AFFX) : Reports Q3 (Sep) earnings of $0.25 per share, $0.06 better than the Reuters Estimates consensus of $0.19; revenues rose 4.8% year/year to $79.9 mln vs the $86.5 mln consensus. Company issues in-line guidance for Y04 (Dec), sees EPS of $0.60-0.70 vs. Reuters Estimates consensus of $0.60.
Cerner beats by a penny, ex items, issues mixed guidance for Q4 (CERN) : Reports Q3 (Sep) adjusted earnings of $0.45 per share, ex items, $0.01 better than the Reuters Estimates consensus of $0.44; revenues rose 12.0% year/year to $231.1 mln vs the $233.9 mln consensus.
VeriSign beats by $0.03 (VRSN) 22.00 -0.16: Reports Q3 (Sep) earnings of $0.19 per share, ex-items, $0.03 better than the Reuters Estimates consensus of $0.16; revenues rose 21.3% year/year to $325.3 mln vs the $291.1 mln consensus.
PMC-Sierra reports in-line (PMCS) 9.05 +0.27: Reports Q3 (Sep) earnings of $0.04 per share, in line with the Reuters Estimates consensus of $0.04; revenues rose 12.8% year/year to $71.2 mln vs the $72 mln consensus.
Symantec beats EPS target by $0.02, co guides fiscal Q3 and fiscal '05 higher (SYMC) 54.43 -0.93: Reports Q2 (Sep) earnings ex items of $0.41 per share, $0.02 better than the Reuters Estimates consensus of $0.39; revenues rose 44.1% year/year to $618 mln vs the $592.8 mln consensus.
