The strikes would instead be aimed at military units that have carried out chemical attacks, the headquarters overseeing the effort and the rockets and artillery that have launched the attacks, according to the options being reviewed within the administration.

An American official said that the initial target lists included fewer than 50 sites, including air bases where Syria’s Russian-made attack helicopters are deployed. The list includes command and control centers as well as a variety of conventional military targets.

Perhaps two to three missiles would be aimed at each site, a far more limited unleashing of American military power than past air campaigns over Kosovo or Libya.

Some of the targets would be “dual use” systems, like artillery that is capable of firing chemical weapons as well as conventional rounds. Taking out those artillery batteries would degrade to some extent the government’s conventional force — but would hardly cripple Mr. Assad’s sizable military infrastructure and forces unless the air campaign went on for days or even weeks.

Es wird wohl keinen Syrien-Angriff geben. Der Kongress wird ablehnen.
Jeder einzelne der dort versammelten Repräsentanten wird sich fragen: "Wie viele Dollar verdiene ich persönlich mehr, mit welchen Argumenten unterstützt das meine spätere Wiederwahl - wenn ich dem zustimme?"
Die Antwort lautet: Keine!
Damit ist das abgelehnt.
US-Politiker interessieren sich i. d. R. nur für sich selbst. Obama ist da wohl eine der ganz wenigen Ausnahmen.

Weil eine $-Nachforderung von Obama in der Sache Syrieneinsatz im Falle eines unvorhergesehenen Verlaufs nicht ausgeschlossen werden kann, und weil die anstehende Schlacht im Kongress im Herbst wg. der Schuldenobergrenze furchtbar sein wird, werden die Republikaner hier mehrheitlich streiken.

Das alles sei nur "an internal Syrian conflict." So argumentieren die Chinesen und Russen auch. Das Chemiewaffen-Argument wird überhaupt nicht verstanden, weil es moralisch basiert ist. Die US-Repräsentanten ticken so schon lange nicht mehr. Moralische Verpflichtung wegen irgendwelcher Werte? Das wird überhaupt nicht kapiert!
Wichtig ist nur Geld, Macht und evtl. noch Sex. Ende der Werteskala dieser Leute!

Obama said that he will address the nation from the Oval Office on Tuesday night. But how many people will one address really persuade?

The resolution may not reach the chamber until the week of Sept. 16. Also that week, the UN may report on the laboratory analysis of samples collected by a UN chemical weapons inspection team at the site of the Aug. 21 attack. The team won’t make a judgment on who initiated the assault.

That timetable approaches the start of UN General Assembly session, which Obama is scheduled to address Sept. 24. A U.S. attack just before or during the UN session would risk a stream of speeches critical of the U.S., which would undercut any message Obama may hope to send Assad and his supporters. The inspectors’ report will be important for U.S. allies, most of whom haven’t supported a strike publicly so far.
